SUMMARY:Reviving AWWA D101: Advancing Inspection Protocols for Reliable Water Storage Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:The American Water Works Association (AWWA) reintroduced the AWWA D101 standard in October 2024, reinstating a document that had been withdrawn in 1998 and later incorporated into Appendix C of AWWA M42. In 2013, AWWA formed a Revision Task Force to reestablish D101 as a standalone standard, culminating in this current “first edition.” This version places a strong emphasis on inspection practices for water storage tanks and associated infrastructure, with a focus on Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI).\nWhile future editions are expected to expand to the broader scope of the original standard—covering inspection and repair of steel water tanks and reservoirs—this edition provides a critical framework for defining quality assurance requirements during construction. It establishes consistent expectations for inspection procedures, documentation, and field verification, helping to reduce construction deficiencies, minimize maintenance needs, and improve long-term performance.\nThis presentation will outline the development of AWWA D101, summarize key components of the updated standard, and discuss its practical application for engineers, owners, and inspectors involved in both new tank construction and the management of existing water storage infrastructure.\n
