SUMMARY:Transforming a High-Risk River Crossing into Design Certainty: Geotechnical Investigation for the US-51 Ohio River Bridge
DESCRIPTION:A comprehensive overwater geotechnical investigation was performed to support replacement of the US 51 Ohio River Bridge between Wickliffe, Kentucky, and Cairo, Illinois. Prior investigations were constrained by complex subsurface conditions, challenging river environment, and platform limitations, resulting in uncertainty for deep foundation design. This study presents an integrated approach to acquiring high-quality subsurface data under these conditions.\nThe project site lies within the New Madrid Seismic Zone and required borings extending 300–400 ft below the riverbed. Subsurface conditions included variable sand deposits, complex stratigraphy, and problematic clay units such as Porters Creek Clay, which present challenges for both sampling and foundation performance. Environmental factors—including strong currents, debris, and proximity to a USACE lock and dam—further constrained operations and access.\nA self-elevating lift boat was deployed to provide a stable drilling platform, minimizing sample disturbance associated with floating barges. High-precision positioning and remote operations technologies were utilized to improve borehole accuracy and operational safety. Advanced sampling methods, including triple-tube coring, were implemented to improve recovery in difficult strata.\nField operations were coordinated with navigation authorities to mitigate impacts to commercial traffic. Adaptive drilling and sampling procedures were applied to address variable ground conditions.\nThe investigation produced a consistent and defensible subsurface dataset to support foundation design. The approach demonstrates the application of offshore methodologies to inland environments to improve data quality and reduce geotechnical uncertainty for critical infrastructure projects.\n
