Making Select Fill from Clay Soils for Pavement & Building Foundations
Clays, in particular, are poor performers due to their shrink/swell characteristics. The influence of moisture or its absence in Texas can affect soils to depths greater than ten feet. With diminishing sources of quality select fill within economical haul distances, many in the engineering community are forced to find innovative solutions to deal with clay soils. Lime stabilization has been employed for decades and has once again emerged as an effective and economical strategy to deal with expansive clay soils under pavements and building foundations. This presentation will discuss how the addition of lime can permanently change clay soils, stabilizing and strengthening them into high performance pavement and building foundations.
