Full Depth Reclamation - The Benefits & Innovations

In the last decade the equipment development for Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) has significantly improved. Current reclaimers can reclaim existing asphalt pavements, the base and subgrade while mixing in a binder in a single pass to a depth of 20-inches. All while mixing in the binder and water, if necessary. The cost, time and effort to remove the existing pavement and replace it with a dwindling supply of quality aggregates along with the impact on the traveling public is a significant benefit. Generally, projects that are candidates for FDR will have base and subgrade issues. Hence, it is important to determine the depth of subgrade in need of reclaiming. The key to FDR is providing a consistent mix equivalent to plant/pugmill mixes and the use of similar QC/QA testing and tolerances to ensure spread rates and densities are achieved, will be identified. Many traditional and
proprietary binders have limitations, which the Engineer needs to understand will be presented. The benefits of FDR far outweigh the issues and with the improvements in construction equipment and binders more can be done with less impact on the environment, the traveling public, and yet cost less and last longer as will be demonstrated.
