Adding Value to your Civil Engineering Project with a VE Study

Value Engineering (VE) Studies are often exercised by State and Federal agencies, such as TxDOT and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and less so by local governments. However, VE Studies can be a very useful tool for any project. On average, project cost savings in the 10-15% range can be realized through the implementation of recommendations developed in a VE Study. Additionally, the VE Study can also generate ideas that will reduce long-term operational and maintenance costs, as well as other non-financial benefits to the function of a facility. This presentation dives into to VE Study methodology and includes case studies of how significant cost savings have been derived from including a VE Study in a project’s overall planning. It also shares how non-engineers can get involved with the VE facilitation process and even earn a new certification.

The Presentation includes the following learning objectives:

• Learn how you can enhance your career by pursuing certification as a Value Methodology Associate (VMA) or Certified Value Specialist (CVS).
• Learn how to apply divergent or creative thinking skills to a guided group effort charged with finding ways to improve a project, product, or process.
• Learn how to collaborate with a wide variety of professionals with different backgrounds and differing views on how to approach engineering scenarios to realize significant cost savings. The presentation will review each of the six phases of a Value Engineering Study.
