Navigating the New Wave of PFAS Regulations: Comprehensive Insights and Solutions for Water Purveyors

In April 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized the first-ever National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Although these regulations are relatively new to several states, facilities on the East Coast have been grappling with PFAS for several years. It is imperative for many utilities to swiftly familiarize themselves with PFAS, including its origins and methods for its removal from water systems.
This presentation aims to provide a comprehensive overview of PFAS, encompassing their sources, health effects, the EPA’s final NPDWR for PFAS, and the resulting impacts on water systems. Additionally, it will delve into the EPA’s proposed sampling and reporting requirements, as well as the approaches adopted by other states in addressing PFAS in drinking water.

Furthermore, the presentation will explore the most effective treatment technologies currently employed for PFAS removal, along with emerging technologies undergoing testing and a comparison of the most advanced available options. Experiences in implementing treatment technologies will be presented, highlighting challenges faced and innovative solutions implemented when utilizing different PFAS treatment technologies. Moreover, this session will provide insights into considerations for selecting appropriate treatment methods and available funding opportunities specifically tailored for PFAS treatment
