The Wide World of Cement Applications in Texas

Cement is the most widely used manufactured product in the world, and in Texas it plays a vital role across transportation, water resources, energy, and everyday construction. Its versatility makes it indispensable for engineers who seek strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness in their projects. From highways, bridges, and tunnels to erosion control, dams, and oil and gas wells, cement and concrete provide reliable solutions that have stood the test of time. In pavement engineering, cement is used to stabilize soils and aggregate bases, create cement-treated layers, and build long-lasting concrete surfaces that extend service life and reduce life-cycle costs. Engineers are also exploring innovative materials such as Portland-limestone cement (Type IL), which reduces carbon impacts while maintaining performance, and 3-D printing with cement, which holds promise for delivering affordable and resilient housing solutions. Beyond infrastructure, cement touches daily life in countless ways, from driveways, sidewalks, and parking areas to countertops, pools, and utility poles, demonstrating its unmatched versatility. As Texas continues to grow and face challenges from rapid urbanization, heavy traffic, and extreme weather, cement-based applications are increasingly recognized as a sustainable and resilient choice. This presentation will highlight the breadth of cement applications in Texas, showcase new innovations, and provide engineers with insights to make informed material decisions for durable, long-lasting infrastructure.
